Interview excerpt from interview with Voyage magazine:
Today we’d like to introduce you to Eder Enciso.
Hi Eder, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child born and raised in Mexico City with extremely supportive and kind parents, I grew up with many opportunities to practice different things. From sports like soccer and track to arts, drawing, and design, my parents always allowed me to enjoy different activities. I was always taken to different places—museums, parks—and that freedom allowed me to discover my love for drawing cartoons and playing soccer.
During my developing years, I focused on these two main disciplines: design and football soccer. I was always training, and any time I had free time, I would draw and sell my drawings to other kids—even during school, which got me in trouble a couple of times. But my teachers would tell my parents they felt bad taking my drawings since they were so good. (chuckle)
During my teenage years, my aunt helped me get my first job editing books and preparing them for the press. This was my first introduction to production-ready design. Then my dad bought me a screen printing press, and with the help of my cousin, I learned to create positives for printing on shirts. I started creating my own designs using what I had learned at the editorial firm and began selling custom shirts for my friends and their bands.
Then I formally pursued a graphic design career at the best university in Latin America, the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), of which I’m a proud alumnus. I learned all the principles that would later propel me and prepare my way to specialize in brand identity development.
While studying, I had the blessing of working in places that helped me polish my taste and allowed me to see how designers would arrive at solutions—basically to see the creative process unfold.
After years of working as a production designer and Art Manager for PepWear (a screen printing company), I started to offer logo design services to friends and family members, and little by little established a side hustle to help provide for our growing family.
In 2017, I founded E49 Creative, a design studio that a few years later became my branding-specialized firm. During the pandemic in 2020, I decided to go full-time with my own studio, and it was the best decision for our family. It allowed me to be a present dad while providing for my family, but it also allowed me to serve my clients better by giving them a level of attention, strategy, and speed that is very hard to find in our industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing in life comes easily, especially the worthwhile things. Yet I’ve learned that when something is meant to be, it flows naturally, and when it’s not, no amount of force can make it happen. I’ve weathered slow months, hiring disappointments, difficult terminations, challenging clients, and technical setbacks. But the highs have been equally profound.
I think of clients who first encountered my work when I was charging $100 per logo, only to return years later with trust in me worth thousands of dollars for complete brand transformations. The faith people place in others to solve their problems and improve their businesses never ceases to amaze me.
These peaks and valleys are our teachers. Like any garden, life will always have weeds—but we must tend to them. If we allow negativity to take root, it will overtake everything we’ve cultivated. I’m convinced that life itself is a privilege to learn from. The cost of experience is paid through gratitude, endurance, and remembrance.
